not want people with guns in our school. >> senator dianne feinstein plans to present a bill banning assault weapon this january when the new congress convenes. the nra points out there was a ban in place from 1994 until 2004. >> it hasn't worked. dianne feinstein had her ban and columbine occurred. >> but other point out there was also an armed guard at columbine. now, rather than creating new laws, the nra says the federal government needs to do a better job enforcing the ones already on the books. duarte? >> thank you, tara mergener, in washington. >>> now, there's just one week left until the fiscal deadline. the president and congress are on holiday break. before he went on break he called for a limited extension on tax cuts for americans. the last best hope for a deal may rest in the senate. yesterday senator lindsey graham said he would vote for a revenue increase including a tax hike, but he doesn't like it. >> hikes are part of the solution driven by the president but he's going to get tax rate hikes. to my republican colleagues, if we can protect 99% of the americans from a

. please welcome to the stage senator dianne feinstein. thank you very much for being here. >> thank you. thank you very much. thank you very much mayor lee, leader pelosi, jackie spear, david chiu. most importantly i think the finest secretary of transportation we have had, and nancy said what he has done for san francisco. i can tell you this is a secretary for california as well. [applause] whether it's riverside county, whether it's los angeles, whether it's the central valley, whether it's the san francisco bay area secretary lahood has been responsible. he's been available for phone calls. he's listened to the reasons for projects and he has moved ahead. would you give him a big round of applause please. [applause] >> well, it's time to say a prayer. it's bottom of the ninth. they have two on and one out, so everybody -- if the giants win this i think they can win the series but they need to win this so let it happen please. i can't tell you how important i feel this project is. i also can't tell you how hard it is to build anything in san francisco, so this project must

control, you could ban all dianne feinstein, do whatever she wants to with magazines, it's not going to make any kid safer. we got to get to the real problem, the real causes and that's what the nra is trying to do. i have people all over the country calling me and saying, wayne, i went to bed safer last night because i have a firearm. don't let the media try to make this a gun issue. >> that's argument, it not fact. >> it is fact. >> a feeling is not fact. a feeling is a sense of reassurance, that's not what you're presenting. let's talk more specifically about what you're talking about, armed guards in school. there are successful examples. fairfax county, virginia has armed officers. there are examples where it hasn't worked. the columbine tragedy, it didn't stop the carnage. >> there were armed guards there and they didn't go in. they were under orders that if something happened they were to call the police for backup. >> they exchanged fires with the shooters. >> they waited for the s.w.a.t. team to show up and the s.w.a.t. team sat outside and tried to figure out what to do. ev

. you had that for ten years when dianne feinstein passed that ban in '94, it was on the books. columbine occurred right in the middle of it. it didn't make any difference. i know everyone -- this town wants to argue about gun control. i don't think it's what will work. what will work is this, i'll tell you this -- >> this is a matter of logic. anybody watching this is going to say i just heard mr. lapierre say the standard is we should try anything that might reduce the violence and you're telling me it's not a matter of common sense that if you don't have an ability to shoot off 30 rounds without reloading that just possibly you could reduce the loss of life, that adam lanza may not have been able to shoot as many kids if he didn't have as much ammunition? >> i don't buy your argument. >> it's not possible? >> there are so many different ways he could have done it. there's endless amount of ways a monster can do it. >> don't take it from me. here is a jed judge, a gun owner and supports the nra, here is what he wrote in the "los angeles times." "bystanders got to tucson shoot

's number two democrat says congressional hearings on gun control are on the way. senator dianne feinstein telling to get an assault weapon ban bill on the floor next month. senator chuck schumer of new york since in a political opportunity, passing gun-control insulation. >> i think we could be added to pinpoint for two reasons. to pinpoint where we might acally get something done. first, this was not a single incident. second, of course, it involves children. lou: hardly anyone is using to talk about mental illness, the disaffection of the mentally disturbed, the importance of a strong family and how to better protect our schools. we'll be taking on those issues tonight, talking with former homeland security director and virginia tech review panel member governor tom ridge. also, a closer look at what congress is having some much trouble getting answers from america's top diplomat on the benghazi terrorist attack.. author jean marie last this on her new book, hidden america, which celebrates the people that are too often ignored but do the jobs that make our lives in this country work. o

showdown. a hannity one on one shootout and then senator dianne feinstein is introducing a new assault weapons ban and believe it or not she s actually now talking about gun owners being registered and fingerprinted. we will get to that and much we will get to that and much let's give thanks - for an idea. a grand idea called america. the idea that if you work hard, if you have a dream, if you work with your neighbors... you can do most anything. this led to other ideas like lerty and rock 'n' roll. to free markets, free enterprise, and free refills. it put a man on the moon and a phone in your pocket. our country's gone through a lot over the centuries and a half. but this idea isn't fragile. when times get tough, it rallies us as one. every day, more people believe in the american idea and when they do, the dream comes true. we're grateful to be a part of it. we go! we're gonna make some juice! woman: it's gonna be good! she's excited. little bit of kale. please don't put this online. woman: i'm putting it all over the line! it's wet. it needs something. no, it'll go. woman: don't br

. will that be enough to push the political landscape. senator dianne feinstein of course, democrat of california, very powerful within the democratic party. and the senate. she says she is going to introduce legislation when the congress comes back in january. on controlling the sale of assault weapons again. big question, will that ban on the sale of assault weapons be reinstated. it's all a question of how much political muscle is behind each side. and how much mr. la pierre may, may have damaged the nra's case. by virtue of how that friday press conference went over. miguel? >> barbara starr, thank you very much in washington. >>> and now, to the fiscal cliff. and we are just about to go over the edge. congress has left for the holidays. if they don't get a deal done soon, tax increases and budget cuts will hit after the first of the year. earlier, republican congressman, steve la tourette said the president has been too focused on tax cuts for the rich. but he did leave the door open a little. >> i'm okay, you president, you can tax the rich people. but come up with some spending cuts, we're borro

of protection possible. >> reporter: california senator dianne feinstein who is proposing a new assault weapons ban says she is upset the nra didn't go any further with gun restrictions. >> it's inconceivable after what the nra said to me today that they don't think people who have guns should have background checks or that they should be registered. >> it's a horribly poor choice to -- to say, you know, that the answer to gun violence is to put more guns out there. >> reporter: andrew is a parent of students in the west contra costa school district. based in richmond they deploy 20 armed police officers in all high schools and middle schools at a cost of $2 million a year. the district has put no cops in its three dozen elementary schools and has no plans or money to do so. >> i'm flad we're having that conversation because i think we have experience -- i'm glad we're having that conversation because i think we have experience with it. i think it's an overreaction as a school board member. how am i going to put armed police officers at 50 schools? >> we're live outside the gates of richmond h

than enthusiastic about the idea, especially the democrats. dianne feinstein who is expected to introduce gun control legislation in january, called the nra idea "distraction." others suggest it might have the opposite effect on lawmakers. >> well, i think he is so extreme a tone deaf he actually helps the cause of us passing sensible gun legislation in the congress. >> we have 130,000 elementary school and secondary schools in this country. if you had two officers in each, that would cost $25 billion. where is that money going to come from? >> one g.o.p. senator said he is not sure this needs to be a federal effort. >> local education decisions are best made at the local level. >> but the ceo of the national rifle association who called the connecticut school murders a "horrible tragedy" is proposing a voluntary program to allow schools to bring in retired police, military or secret service together provide armed security. >> every mom and dad would make them feel better if they drop off their kids at school we have a police officer in the school, good guy that if a horrible

this be? later senator dianne feinstein release as gun control plan which will require a registry and fingerprints. does the proposed legislation go too far? we will debate it when the factor continues. >> in the impact segment tonight, you may remember that falling the attacks in benghazi, libya, four statement department workers supposedly lost their jobs. however, there are now reports that they may just be switching desks and that the four are still getting paid by the government. this is unbelievable. the american people should be outraged at this because it is is pathetic. it's disgraceful. it is purposefully misleading it is a ruse, smoke and mirrors. this is so wrong for the state department to do. what did they do? well, it's just one more lie in a web of lies dealing with the terrorist attack and the consulate in benghazi, libya. >> greg: dig that color. with us is lt. colonel ralph peters. is this what you call failing horizontally. >> no, it's called aspirational failure. only a washington program for federal bureau democrats and senior army marine navy air force gener

ban, quote, unquote, is something that dianne feinstein had in the works in the immediate aftermath of the election even before the newtown massacre occurred. >> you know something, michelle, what really strikes me is it's very interesting, we broke, and rightly so, our presidentings, our politicians, hollywood stars, they all have armed guards protecting them. we protect our money with armed guards. but when anybody mentioned maybe protecting children in our school system with armed guards, they are viewed as extremists. you mentioned exploit ago tragedy here. is there any law that could have been passed that would have prevented this from happening? anything you can think of? >> well, look. connecticut already had a so-called assault weapons ban and it didn't stop that monster from doing what he did. these kind of massively restrictive gun control laws certainly don't stop the bloodshed in obama's chicago, which we talked about last week, or in washington d.c. where so many citizens are not protected by armed guards the way that the privileged elites on capitol hill or eelites on

is going to backfire is the gun control thing. when you look at what dianne feinstein is wanting and start looking at her website, that is the kind of thing that i think is biting off a little more than you can chew and using a crisis, not letting a crisis go to waste. let's take on the gun control issue. >> i think there will be an effort to pass more reasonable gun laws than what we have today. i don't know what it will look like. the president has a committee looking at it led by joe biden. >> laura: another biden committee. isn't he still tracking the stimulus? that is the last thing he was in charge of tracking was the stimulus bill. the summer of recovery. >> on this and many other issues a question of how does the republican house react? >> laura: he will take it to the people and do the perpetual campaign on that. >> plenty more ahead as "the factor" moves along. >>> a newspaper facing intense criticism as one blogger tries to get even with the paper. >>> supreme court justice sonia sotomayor hands another setback sotomayor hands another setback to the contraception [ laughter ] s

to answering your questions next week. >> after the nra briefing, senators dianne feinstein and richard blumenthal spoke to reporters. >> there have been a lot of lawmakers like yourself -- is that disappointing the have not come forward? >> let me go back to 94. it was hard. the chairman of the judiciary and the house was defeated and the speaker was defeated. the nra went out to target people who voted for the assault weapons legislation. they were critical of it, but they were targeting and threatening and carried these winds -- carried these threats out. that fear of intimidation has carried on to today. i come from the biggest state in the union, a state where rim in sync. it takes a lot of courage for a senator from about the state at a small state -- california is bigger than the 21 states and the district of columbia combined. it takes a tremendous courage and backbone for people to stand up. leaders lead. we don't follow. we have had so much since the massive shooting at the texas bell power -- bell tower, along with the increased technological killing power of weapons in the u

to say five or so bullets, willing to go after what feinstein is pushing, dianne feinstein, something on assault weapons. is there something he can go for and win because it seems to me losing will not get him any points. your thoughts? >> i think he's clearly announced that's the direction he's going to go. look, when you have an event like this, i'm very pro-second amendment, but when you see something like this occur, it causes you to think through in terms of your beliefs, do you continues to hold those beliefs given what happened. i still do, and obviously the president is going -- >> what's the smart move though? is it magazine side, mental health and -- >> you just got to it. i would suggest where he can make some significant process is the mental health side of it. when you look at what happens to gabby giffords, at virginia tech. >> give me john hinckley. something on limiting the size of these magazines, getting them down to, say, five or so bullets. willing to go after what feinstein's pushing, dianne feinstein, something on assault weapons. is there something he can go for

. >> the gun component was brought up and his suggestion was to arm the schools and senator dianne feinstein quick to criticize and they had a news conference to respond to the nra and i read from the police report from 1999 and she was noting that at columbine there were two armed guards that could not stop the killers. let's listen to that, and then, mark, i want to get your response to that. >> there were two armed law enforcement officers who twice engaged the shooters at columbine. that didn't prevent 15 from being killed and 23 wounded. >> mark, you know, the nra, we all know here in this conversation. it's been so powerful for so many years, in another day and age, lawmakers and the public might have listened to what he said yesterday, but this is now. what is different here in terms of his call for arming schools? will even be listened to? >> richard, normally the pr 101 is a group that seems to be under siege and of course, the nra was attracting a lot of negative attention and you typically make a concession or two, even if it's a fig leaf, just to be able to strike the right tone

is how he is protected. the hypocrisy is astounding. other democrats, dianne feinstein came out and said the national guard should be at schools. i think -- >> greg: boxer. >> andrea: i thought it was feinstein. >> greg: same thing. >> kimberly: california. >> andrea: i think it should be left to localities. it shouldn't be a federal mandate or the national guard. last time was eisenhower. some neighbors need it more than others. >> bob: a lot of schools have armed policemen around the country. >> greg: wealthy students. >> bob: mostly in poor neighborhoods in a lot of cities. in utah you can carry in a concealed gun. nra is -- >> greg: no, no. they are talking about the officers which is why the crime dropped in new york city schools they have a school safety program with police officers there. >> greg: i'm not sure that it follows the same program or pattern as new york. >> bob: not like new york. you come back to chicago but these are gang-drug related wars in chicago. >> kimberly: so is it okay? he is not doing a good job. >> bob: it's the drug wars. >> eric: so are you saying don't

, bob, is that when you look at the problem-- let's say we pass diann dianne feinstein's bill, how would that stop the next school shooting? it wouldn't. because it doesn't take guns off the street, and if you did, you couldn't. so that doesn't solve the problem. >> schieffer: but doesn't it make it more difficult? mr. keene-- >> it doesn't-- >> schieffer: if a man had talked about that school in connecticut with a baseball bat, he might have given a couple of people a concussion, but all those children would not be dead. >> well, you know, the fact that something is misused, whether it's a baseball bat or the mass killing in a chinese school with an axe and a knife, doesn't mean that you ban baseball bats, axes and knives or guns. >> schieffer: nobody is saying-- >> it means suprotect the innocent on one exphawnd try to keep weapons out of the hands of those who are likely to commit such crimes. one of the problems and this is reflected in public attitudes is what's wrong with our mental health system? because a lot of these people are not even-- are not even-- when they've been seen as

with wall-to- wall attention. >> reporter: democratic senator dianne feinstein of california, a long time leader in gun control, called the n.r.a.'s plan a distraction that's only intended to delay action by congress. >> should we have a conversation about school security? yes. should we have a conversation about mental illness and the culture of violence? yes. but we can't ignore the common denominator in all of these deadly massacres: access, easy access to killing machines. >> reporter: the fact is, scott, that one-third of america's public schools already have armed security and it's interesting to note an armed deputy sheriff was assigned to columbine high school near denver in 1999 but failed to stop that attack that killed 13. >> pelley: chip, thank you very much. of course, the best thing is to prevent a mass shooting and the united states secret service has spent years studying assassins and school shooters in order to do just that. brian vossekuil and robert fein wrote two studies for the secret service and they told us in an interview for "60 minutes" that gunmen often leave a

weapons proposed by california democratic senator dianne feinstein. getting it through congress quickly is highly unlikely, but the mere mention of a ban is enough to send sales soaring and, it's not just guns. brownells said it recently sold more than three and a half years worth of ar-15 magazines in three days. even before newtown, sales of guns and ammunition this year were surging. fbi background checks of potential gun buyers were up 31% in november 2012 over 2011. in a report issued prior to newtown, the market research firm ida's world that tracks the gun industry, found gun enthesists are working themselves into a frenzy over what another four years under the obama administration may hold for gun laws. chuck is an instructor at nova firearms in falls church, virginia, where they nearly sold out of ar-15's and high capacity magazines after newtown. >> so ironically this shooting is inspiring more people to buy this gun, the ar-15 and the high round magazines? >> if i could, i would give senator feinstein and the president salesmen of the year awards. >> reporter: senator feinste

't worked. dianne feinstein had her ban and columbine occurred. >> a moment ago you were talking about guns in school, and you said something that made me think that that's something you would agree w.where do you stand on that? >> i don't agree with it. i think the republicans talk about it now. they are going to use that as a way to get around the issue, and the issue is high capacity magazines, and -- and assault weapons. i think david gregory did a magnificent job with the vice president of the nra this morning, and when he says -- he said that he doesn't think the magazine issue has anything to do with it, well, it does. lanza got the guns that his mother had in the house, and he would have taken whatever guns she, and if he had a gun without a high capacity magazine that couldn't shoot more than ten shots, that's all the shots he would have gotten off. he didn't go to the stove and pick his arsenal. he took what his mother gave him. if you had less of those weapons around you'd have more children alive. no matter what mr. lapierre said some of those children died because of the magazi

of course for senators based there to do their work. so senator dianne feinstein's staff joined in my office in the russell building. my chief of staff at the time gave them full access. one of senator feinstein's staff members commented on that. republican office giving democrats free rein. my chief of staff just said they have full access but complete trust in them. senator feinstein and i have teamed up to pass important legislation. the hutcheson/feinstein overseas commission that studied the training capabilities and costs of overseas military bases to determine their value compared to american bases. this resulted in consolidation and closures that brought thousands of troops back to the united states where training and rapid deployment was superior. we passed the feinstein hutchison breast cancer stamp bill, voluntary purchase has raised $72 million for breast cancer research. that was senator feinstein's idea and senator feinstein and i took the amber alert for affected children nationwide which has accounted for rescuing document almost 600 children since its passage. i remember whe

, connecticut., senator dianne feinstein has been promising to push for a renewal of legislation banning certain weapons. other senators have voiced their support for such legislation. but n-r-a c-e-o wayne lapierre is dismissing any bans on assault weapons and made clear yesterday it was highly unlikely that the n- r-a would support any new gun regulations. meanwhile, demonstrators marched over new york city's brooklyn bridge demanding tighter gun laws in the country. several hundred people participated in the march. carrying candles, the protestors stopped in the middle of the iconic bridge to read the names of the children and adults killed at sandy hook elementary school in connecticut. >> an afghan police official says an afghan policewoman has killed an american adviser at the kabul police headquarters. the deputy police chief says an investigation is underway to determine whether the killing was intentional or accidental. the victim was a military or civilian adviser. the nato military command says it's looking into reports of the shooting but had no other information. >> hawaii is saying

was an effective method of obtaining information. senator's john mccain, dianne feinstein and carl levin are asking the head of sony pictures to correct the record. we believe you have an obligation to state the role of torture in the hunt for osama bin laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative. let's turn to the director of the aclu national security project. thank you so much for coming on the show. >> thank you for having me. >> the opening scene depicts the torture of a detainee. later the detainee supplies a piece of information during a meal with his interrogators. do you think the film misleads people on the hunt for bin laden, does it not provide sufficient context? >> i think the film certainly starts out with the claim that it's based on fact and it leaves the strong but entirely false impression that torture led to bin laden. and we know that that is false from the people who have reviewed the cia's records. senator's feinstein, levin and mccain are amongst the senate intelligence community personnel who reviewed millions of pages of cia documents

of the union. meanwhile, california senator dianne feinstein's planning to introduce a bill had a would ban assault weapons as expected. conservative groups are already taking aim at it. on the drudge report, for example, one headline reads civil war senate to go for handguns. now, we were just talking about conservative rhetoric on a different civil war earlier. let's put war aside. let's put the militant language aside and let's talk about what is happening here, maggie. as you know, people follow this debate remember the original assault weapons ban which was itself considered very cosmetic. it was essentially at bottom a ten-year hiatus. it didn't take guns out of circulation. interest didn't deal with the gun show loopholes, background checks, lot of the issues that have come up after this mass murder i mentioned. and even that passed by just two votes. what's different now? >> well, what's different now is we had a spate of these shootings. what's different now frank sly 20 dead children. it is unimaginable, unimaginable, i think, for anybody. what's also different is the nra which ha

to pass? >> i think that's a phony piece of legislation. >> so dianne feinstein was brought up i think five times in that interview. do you think this line of attack is going to work for the n perform a, piling on california lawmaker, from that state? pinches i think we have to take up all the issues. they mass killings have to stop and we have to do everything we can. it will include looking at how many bullets do you need in a magazine in a semiautomatic weapon? i don't know, but i'd like all the hunters to come to the table as well as the people who live in cities who do not want guns and want gun controls. we had need a real dialogue, not just a one-sided one. we need to talk about xbox 360, wii, and the games, how far down into children they're getting. we need to talk about movies. we need to talk about the rating sims, what's in pg and pg-13 are pretty violent. i think we just have a culture we need to address in its totality if we're going to take people who are clearly mentally ill and try to give them help earlier. i thought charles crowdhammer, who is a psychiatrist, had a p

in america. but there is going to be a bill we know senator dianne feinstein is going to introduce a bill on the first day of the new congress. why shouldn't more folks get behind that, including some republicans? because i'd like to remind you of one thing. justice scalia said in the heller decision, like most rights the second amendment is not unlighted. -- not unlimited. he said, it is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever for whatever purpose. from the high priest of the supreme court of conservatism himself. why doesn't that create some room for current conservatives like ronald reagan did in 1994 to back an assault weapons ban? >> the issue is, are you going to be punishing law-abiding gun owners with these kind of regulations? there are plenty of people who own these guns who have a right to own these guns who are not part of the problem. are you punishing those people who have a right to own those guns because there are crazies out there that you are not affecting with an assault guns weapon? there is nothing about this that touches mental he

senator dianne feinstein saying the law is important to our national security and must classified. meanwhile, another potential below to -- blow to the economy has been averted at least for now. dock workers agreeing to hold off on a strike that would cost the u.s. economy billions of dollars thanks to a temporary contract extension. the workers now have another five weeks to work out their labor dispute with port owners and shippers. phil keating following the story in our south florida newsroom. boy, phil, this affected ports from giewrch houston. how did these two sides get together? >> well, they did what congress has failed to do. that is they worked out a deal. but since this deal is still not entirely permanent. neither side is giving specifics as who who bundle and if both sides bundle and how much. the key sticking point all along has been the long shoreman get paid more the heavier a container is the owners of the shipping company wanted those capped. the longer shore men did not. this from the federal mediator in washington today quote. the container royalty payment iss

. california democratic senator dianne feinstein who is expected to introduce gun control legislation in january called the nra idea a quote distraction. jamie? job and family jail-time what about republicans. >> one senator suggests that the federal government should not be the ones helping to set up armed guards in schools program. take lafn. >> i would not want a national earth to say you have to do this at schools. i think local education decisions are best made at the local level. >> senator who says is he a quote strong supporter of second amendment rights maintains that the solutions to shootings like the one in connecticut will be found in families, faith, communities and in medicine. jamie? >> all right. we hope the solution is found. molly, thank you. well, for many 6 those families in newtown, connecticut, this is a heart-breaking christmas. can you imagine one without your loved ones if they died in that elementary school massacre? >> every single second that i think of newtown and i think of every parent who lost a child whether they celebrated christmas, hanukkah or anyt

laws. dianne feinstein is leading the charge. >> what do you say to people who support the right to own arms that this is the camel's nose under the tent and the next thing you will be after concealed carry weapons. you will be after other kinds of gun rights? >> well, that's just not true. it wasn't true with the prior bill that was the law for 10 years. and i just think candidly that dog doesn't hunt. >> why shouldn't it be true? why wouldn't you want to go after those other laws? >> because that's not what i have done in the past and it's not what i'm doing right now. >> greg: however, senator feinstein's proposed legislation calls for fingerprinting thousands of gun owners as well as banning the sale of more than 100 types of guns. joining us from washington larry pratt the executive director of gun owners of america. i wonder how he feels about. this in studio alexus magill jonsz executive director of the values institute progressive group. i bet you think this law is a great idea. >> oh, indeed. even though we have had a declining murder rate in the united states and even though o

dianne feinstein, carl levin, as well as republican john mccain whose own experiences as a p.o.w. in vietnam have made him an outspoken critic of torture. now, since most people have not seen the film yet, let me explain a little bit. the torture scenes, which there are more than one show cia interrogators waterboarding, humiliating, and abusing detainees. in the movie, these interrogations do result in crucial information in the search for osama bin laden. now, i would not say that the film actually glorifies torture, but the cia operatives are not squeamish about what they're doing. at a later point in the film, one of the officials complained about president obama's decision to stop the detainee program. now, in a letter to sony, which is the studio behind the film, the senators say that "zero dark thirty" is, quote, perpetuating the myth that torture is effective. they argue that a still classified report proves they called the coercive interrogations did not result in any information that led to bin laden's capture. here's what else they had to say in the letter. they sa

that to succeed but are not on board with you yet include senator barbara boxer, dianne feinstein, pat leahy, carl levin, max baucus and depending on how you pars the statement, senator jack reed. why are your colleagues holding back and what are you doing to push them on this issue? >> recognize, this is an institution, the senate, that rarely changes its rules. so folks have been here often for very long time saying, well, we can always make a gentleman's agreement to make this place work. we score the social contrast. that would be ideal and certainly if these rules worked in the past why can't they work today. so there are folks reluctant to change them saying the better thing is to restore the social contrast. quite frankly, we've tried that. the minority leader and the democratic leader worked out a gentleman's agreement two years ago. it failed utterly. it's just clear, we're not in the same world. >> sir, how do you define failure? >> well, we failed in the sense that it was supposed to eliminate these huge number of filibusters and allow us to get an agenda on the floor. no longer have th

of the n.r.a. in an article in this morning's "new york times," they quote senator dianne feinstein who was at a news conference on friday, she is the california democrat who is leading an effort to reinstitute a ban on salmt rifles. she wrote -- host: i want to show you more of what she had to say at the news conference yesterday saying that the n.r.a.'s blanket call to narms our schools is nothing more than a distraction. this is more of what she had to say. and gentleman, the senator from the state of california, the honorable dianne feinstein. >> mr. speaker, leader pelosi, mrs. bush, leader reed, leader mcconnell, secretary of state hillary clinton and my colleagues in government, this is a special day to honor a special person in a special place. for many years, i have followed the tragedies and victories of this uncommonly courageous and persistent woman. in 1988, she quickly rose to be the voice of democracy in burma, creating the national league for democracy. elections followed in 1990, where her party won 80% of the seats. that joy quickly turned to tragedy. the military junta nullified the election and arrested aung san suu kyi. she would spend the better part of two decades under house arrest, unable even to visit her dying husband. in 1996, i recall being approached to sponsor a burma sanctions bill. sanctions were put in place in 1997 andsanctions were only loosened in july of this year. senator mcconnell later became one of aung san suu kyi's chief advocates in the senate and we continued to work on behalf of the people in burma. in 2

that for 10 years when dianne feinstein passed the ban in '94. columbine occurred right in the middle of it. it didn't make any difference. i think that is phony piece of legislation and i do not believe it will pass for this reason. it is all built on lies that have been found out. heather: gun control advocates equally adamant about their position. here's democratic senator charles schumer. >> he was so extreme and so tone deaf, not even saying that guns had any part of the problem. that he actually probably helped us as we tried to pass sensible gun legislation in the congress. now he says, he says, the only, the best way, the way, here is what he says. the way to stop a bad guy with guns is have a good guy with guns. why don't we stop the bad guy from getting the gun in the first place? that is the more logical thing to do, rather than wait for a shootout in our schools. god forbid. heather: president obama is vowing to push for a some form of unabout control in the new year. we will have more on this debate in the next hour. gregg: as residents of newtown, connecticut, still struggle w

when dianne feinstein says she's going to introduce this bill, how likely is it to pass and how likely is anything to happen as far as gun control is concerned? >> there's no question that the sentiment has shift ed. we have been reporting on joe mansion who was an a vid supporter saying he's flipped and he wants there to be gun control measures. but he is a pretty safe senator when it comes to the politics of his state. he could be senator for life if he wants to, he's very popular. there are other people up for reelection who are not as safe. they are from gun rights states. many of them are democrats. it's still going to be an uphill battle. there's no chemical weapon about it. it goes back to what we have been talking about since this horrible tragedy happened, which is the main reason why democrats have silent until the newtown tragedy is because it's bad politics. many of them have believed that for the past decade. bad politics in red states to even talk about the idea of gun control. not so much because of the money that the nra puts in but because they are very powerful in gin

made it very difficult, of course, for senators based there to do their work. so senator dianne feinstein's staff joined in my offices in the russell building. my chief of staff at the time gave them full access. one of senator feinstein's staff members commented on that. "a republican office giving democrats free rein?" but my chief of staff just said, they had full access because we trusted them. senator feinstein and i have teamed up to pass important legislation. the hutchison-feinstein overseas basing commission that studied the training capabilities and costs ofverseas military bases to determine their value compared to american bases. this resulted in consolidation and closures that brought thousands of troops back to the united states where training and rapid deployment were superior. we passed the feinstein-hutchison breast cancer stamp bill. through voluntary purchase it has raised $72 million for breast cancer research. that was senator feinstein's idea. and senator feinstein and i took the amber ale for abducted children nationwide, which has accounted for rescuing d

by senator dianne feinstein that is about the cia detention and torture program. and that report needs to be made public. because that cop collusively refutes any suggestion that torture was effective. but the key thing about this also in going back to what glenn said is the vacuum of information created by the obama administration. i think we should talk about that. >> jim clemente, i want to get your thoughts on accountability right after we take this break. . control in the wak of the sandy hook school shooting. democratic senator dianne feinstein is proposing a new assault weapons ban, while president obama is putting vice president biden in charge of the administration's efforts. but a lot of these changes start on a state level. bob marshall is a delegate in the virginia state house. he's proposed a new law for schools in his state which would mean arming teachers. now, i want to ask you this. good morning to you, sir. are you saying that teachers should be able to carry guns in school or be required to carry guns in school? >> no. you're overstating it. look at the situation. arm some teachers, arm some school personnel who voluntarily participate in this. one of the problems that you have is that when you have an area that's a gun-free zone, criminals don't pay attention to this. shootings which have occurred to 1950 to the present with one exception where there's three or more people killed have occurred in areas that are gun-free zones. that's the problem. i want people to be able to have after they receive equivalent law enforcement

're seeing dianne feinstein there on the senate floor. it is vacant on the house side. so in truth how much is really going to get done? >> well, gregg, a lot of this negotiations are really taking place between the leadership levels right now. we don't really have to worry about what is happening on the house floor. it's about what is going on at the white house. now, the president today is going to meet with congressional leaders from both parties, both chambers. they will sit down. they will talk about a potential deal. the president might offer something that maybe the republicans could go for. it wouldn't be a sweeping deal. gregg: like what? >> might be something smaller. well, it would be something that could potentially avoid the major tax hikes coming in january. that is the most politically treacherous for these members. they need to find a way to stop taxes going up for everybody. if there is a deal it will probably focus on the range of taxes that are coming. gregg: susan, the house passed a bill that extends all the tax cuts. the senate passed a bill that extends it for everybo

"the new york times" is now reporting that cia act director michael morrell sent out an agency-wide letter criticizing it. >> it is no question that the -- political drama around this movie is added to the buzz and made it as interesting as the film itself. i guess in the -- in the -- lit help drive interest into this thing but there's also a negative which is the fact that there's been so many of these political complaints that it could hurt the film at oscar time. lot of people will be voting for best picture, you know, may vekd thoughts because they -- they have this sense from, you know, authoritative sources that there is misleading and -- harmful position. >> can i ask you quickly of focus on this lone wolf character maya who is credited with the tracking down of bin laden. was this the case in reality? >> this is a very accurate portrayal. the woman
